Wireless Networking – General Network Security

Network Software Articles No Comments

As we develop an action plan for the design and implementation of a wireless network for your home, we talk about computer security in general. It does not matter what type of network you are planning, whether a dial-up or always-on broadband connection network connection. It does not matter whether you have a hardwired network or plan a wireless network … or a combination of mixed types of connections. If you use your computer to the Internet, youimmediately increase the risk. However, you can minimize your risk by certain preventive steps.

Some of the things that someone can do with bad intentions, manage, access your computer from a remote location and find a way into your computer files where your bank records, tax files, financial information or other personal information used, were able to keep your money or steal your identity using a fraudulent manner.

They could these files … or perhaps they areis evil, and they simply delete or format the hard disk without your knowledge. (When was the last time you have a backup, how would you back all images, videos and files?) Another thing they can do is to hijack your email program and begin transferring tons of spam e – mail in your name, your e-mail from your computer program so that it looks like you send it and through your Internet Service Provider. This could result in termination of your Internet service, depending on thethe contents of the e-mail, you open up to the liability and criminal prosecution without your knowledge of it occurring.

Even if you are in the minority and never have a connection to the Internet, you may still be vulnerable. When someone loads or copying a file from an infected source, your computer may be infected. Here are some basic steps in securing your PC against attacks:

Anti-virus software – Installation and maintenance of this software is simple, but you have to do something. They are onlyhalf way to secure your computer if you load an antivirus program on your computer. You also have the software updates after you install this modified virus definition files at regular intervals, as they get produced and released by the manufacturer to maintain. You should be able to start regular scans and updates from the program. There are a number of solutions for private, non-commercial users.

Personal Firewall – This is a software program, monitors all incoming and outgoing Internet connections that enter or leave the computer. It contains a list of acceptable and approved connections and keeps everything that happens that is not on the list. Windows XP with SP 2, the later versions of Vista and 7 and Mac OSX have a built-in software firewall for its users, but it will only protect your computer when it is active.

External Firewall – The most modern network devices like routers or wireless –Access points over a certain amount of built-in firewall functionality into the device itself. You need to consult on the manufacturer's documentation to figure out what to do and how to enable / maintain this firewall but it should be part of the network planning, installation and research an integral part of the network installation.
